The half day guided tour starts in the medieval capital of Mdina, with a walk through its golden, winding streets that date back to Arab times, and indeed very little has changes since then except for the addition of some wonderful Baroque palaces and churches. The walk will be followed by a visit to the suburb of Mdina, the much larger Rabat, which will include a visit to St. Paul’s Grotto where, according to the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul lived during his three important months in Malta.
From Rabat we will drive on to the San Anton Gardens and the Presidential Palace, a palace built by the Order of St. John which serves as the residence of the President of Malta. The gardens offer a relaxing walk filled with unique flora and fauna, and colonial architecture.
From the gardens we will finish our tour with a flurry, an inevitable stop in the Baroque masterpiece, and capital of Malta, the city of Valletta! We will walk down its rich, grid-pattern streets, laden with Baroque palaces and churches wherever one looks, and delve into the history of the Order of St. John. Our tour in Valletta will include visits to its two most impressive sights: St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the Grand Master’s Palace. St. John’s Co-Cathedral is one of Europe’s richest churches, whose austere façade fails to prepare you for the explosion of art inside. Designed by 18th century artist and architect Matia Preti, and enriched by Caravaggio’s largest masterpiece, the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, the Cathedral inspires a spiritual and aesthetic sense of awe that is un-rivalled. The Grand Master’s Palace, built in the 16th century as the residence of the rulers of the Order, houses the Grand Master’s State Rooms, and the Armoury.
Lunch is not included. Should guests wish to visit museums, kindly note that entrance tickets must be bought directly during the tour.
